The Practicum

Every student in the WGU MSDEL program is required to complete a Practicum.  An agreement between WGU and each state determines the practicum requirements.

When to Start the Practicum

When you begin the program, your mentor will discuss the practicum.  We must follow three non-negotiable rules:

  1. The Practicum can only start on the first day of a new term.

  2. Students are not eligible to begin the practicum until they have completed D016, D017, D018, D019, D622, and D633.  (First six courses)

  3. The practicum is in two parts (courses).  The two parts can not be in the same team at the same time unless the two parts are the final course remaining in the program.

12-month or 6-month Practicum

Students except North Carolina and Washington students can complete the practicum in 6 or 12 months.  These states require a 12-month practicum only.  The following are the requirements:

  1. 12-Month Practicum

    1. The student must have completed the first six courses (D016, D017, D018, D019, D632, and D633.)

    2. The student must have FULL APPROVAL from Field Experience before the practicum can begin.

  2. 6-month Practicum

    1. The student must have completed the first nine courses (D016, D017, D018, D019, D632, D633, D022, D023, and D034)

    2. The student must have FULL APPROVAL from Field Experience before the practicum can begin.

The Practicum Application

The practicum application requires the following:

  1. FERPA Consent Form

  2. Professional Disposition Agreement Form

  3. A New Background Check (non-negotiable – University requirement)

  4. Proof that the student has registered to take the Praxis 5412

  5. Placement and Clinical Supervisor Information form

The Practicum Application Timeline

The practicum application requirements can be a lengthy procedure. Students will generally start the process six months before the scheduled practicum start date. All the requirements must be completed two months before the start date.  Occasionally,  it will take less time if the student accelerates the program.  Generally,  this is the timeline to begin the practicum:

  1. The student begins submitting the practicum requirements six months before the scheduled practicum.

  2. All the requirements must be completed two months (60 days) before the practicum start date.  If this is not completed on time, the practicum will be delayed by at least one month.

  3. If all the requirements are completed on time, the “Official” application will populate within the next seven days.

  4. It takes two months for the application to be reviewed and reach “Full Approval.”

  5. Again, students can only begin the practicum if they have FULL APPROVAL from Field Experience.
