The Practicum

When should a student begin the Practicum Application Process?

Students can begin the Practicum Application process at any time, but it must be completed within two months (60 days) of the Practicum Start Date.   It takes much time to complete the requirements, so it is advised that the student begin 5 - 6 months before the practicum is scheduled to begin.

How long does the practicum last?

Practicums last 6 - 12 months, depending on the student's eligibility and the state that they live in.  By default, all students are scheduled for the 12-month practicum.  To be eligible for the 6-month practicum, students must complete the first nine courses in the program.  The 6-month practicum is NOT eligible for student who live in North Carolina or Washington. These states require a 12-month practicum.

Can I request an extension for my course term?
Extensions for terms and courses are prohibited unless covered by the Incomplete Course Policy.

Why is the MSEDL program unable to be completed in just 6 months?
MSEDL students embark on a practicum experience, but it can only kick off after they have conquered the first six essential courses and fulfilled the practicum application requirements. Plus, it is REQUIRED to start at the beginning of a new term! This means the earliest practicum can launch is in the 2nd term. Most states offer a 6-month practicum, allowing students to complete the program in just 12 months!

What is OTP, and why should you be excited about it?
On-Time Progress (OTP) is all about celebrating your journey toward graduation! It tracks your amazing progress, requiring students to complete at least twelve (12) competency units (CUs) at the undergraduate level and eight (8) at the graduate level each term. This is crucial because it highlights your achievements and keeps you on track towards the graduation timeline you set with your mentor when you embarked on this incredible program!

Procedural Questions

What is considered Academic Activity?

How Does a Term Break Work

Students can take a term break for 1 to 5 months if needed.  Term breaks can only be taken at the end of the student's term. (Term Break Policy)

How did I end up so far behind?

One of the biggest reasons students fall behind is a lack of communication. But don't worry—WGU offers fantastic ways to stay connected! You can choose from weekly calls, bi-weekly calls, or even email and text messages. Just remember, it’s all about making that effort! Connecting with your mentor or CI every 7-14 days is key. If communication slips, you might find yourself in "Academic Recovery." But hang in there—stay proactive, and you won’t be dropped for 25 days! Make it a habit to check your WGU email EVERY DAY!

Another major challenge is managing your time effectively. As a future School Administrator, you'll discover that "your" time often feels like it belongs to everyone else. Daily events and responsibilities will shape your schedule, so be ready—"LIFE" will guide the pace of your MASEDL program!
